Google Says Its Chrome Browser Now Has Over 750 Million Monthly Active Users

Sundar Pichai, Google’s senior vice president for Chrome and Android today announced that the company’s Chrome browser now has more than 750 million monthly active users. That’s up from 450 million users Google announced at last year’s I/O. This number, as far as we can see, includes both desktop and mobile users. Google launched Chrome in 2008 and since then, as Google proudly noted in today’s keynote, it has become the most popular browser in the world. It is also now, as Pichai noted early on in the keynote, a very important platform for Google that stands side-by-side with Android. Just recently, Google also decided to take more of the development process of Chrome in its own hands when it dropped WebKit and decided to start developing its own Blink rendering engine based on WebKit Read more »

Amazon Cloud Player Launches PC App

Thumbnail

As part of its mission to bring its music service "everywhere," Amazon announced the release of a dedicated Cloud Player app for desktop PCs Monday. The release comes less than a week after Amazon announced iOS compatibility with Ford Sync-enabled vehicles. PC users could already access Cloud Player through their web browsers, but the primary benefit of the PC application is the ability to store music offline. Users can also scan their hard drives for music files that haven't yet been uploaded to their storage locker. Cloud Player allows users to stream music files they've purchased from Amazon or uploaded to to a cloud-based storage locker. An unlimited number of Amazon songs, plus 250 songs purchased outside of Amazon, can be uploaded to the cloud and streamed wirelessly using one of Amazon's players for free. First launched on Android two years ago, the service is also available on iOS, Mac, Sonos, Roku and (as mentioned) Ford Sync vehicles Read more.. Read more »

Adzuna Rolls Out Its Jobs Search Engine In Brazil, South Africa, Australia And Canada

Following expansion into Germany last month, Adzuna , the UK startup that operates what it calls a next generation jobs search engine, is taking its wares even further afield today. The London-based company has rolled out dedicated sites for Brazil , South Africa , Australia and Canada . That’s an interesting mix of countries and territories — the U.S., for now, is still notably missing in action — but, nonetheless, we can safely now call Adzuna a startup with global ambitions. Like its UK and German versions, the new localised sites feature the same job search functionality by indexing job vacancies found on classified ads and job boards around the web, and mining that data for its search engine and to provide free access to labour market trends , such as tracking salaries for a particular vocation and region. Adzuna’s social features have made the flight, too. Dubbed Adzuna Connect, users can sign in to Adzuna via Facebook or LinkedIn to leverage their social graph to help them get an in at a particular company which has a job vacancy they wish to apply for. Excerpts From Laurene Powell Jobs’ First Interview Since The Death Of Steve Jobs

We’ve included highlights (with context) from her interview with Rock Center host Brian Williams. On Steve Jobs: “Pretty Cool” Legacy BRIAN WILLIAMS: It’s another way of saying we’re left with a world of really cool stuff. What’s that like? LAURENE POWELL JOBS: It’s pretty cool. Read more »

Turntable.fm Releases Piki to Help Find Music Recommendations From Friends

Thumbnail

Turntable.fm has the best and worst luck of any startup. After launching its social music streaming service in early 2011, Turntable received the kind of media exposure and hype that most companies would kill for. But a few months later, the service's traffic dipped and people started questioning whether it was the next big thing or the next big flop. Since then, Turntable has continued to try building momentum by signing licensing agreements with the four major record labels, releasing an Android app and optimizing its website to allow for thousands of users to listen to music in the same listening room, effectively creating a true, virtual concert space. It's unclear, however, whether any of these updates have really moved the dial much on the public's perception of the company. Read more...
